I know i’m gonna take a lot of crap for saying what I’m about to say but…

What’s the big deal? Let me rephrase that. Why the big deal? Half of downtown Toronto streets are closed down, televised funeral + procession, Metro Toronto Convention Center funeral, free GO service for emergency personnel, officers from across the country flew down here to just take part, most of whom have probably never met the man. Don’t get me wrong, good for him! But I just have one simple question, why? It’s like Princess Diana Just died. It’s like Pope John Paul II just died. It’s like Martin Luther King just died. It’s like someone important just died.

It’s ironic how this has become such a media phenomenon. There are so many people that died in the line of duty over the years that I feel deserved more recognition than what they received. What about our soldiers? Those that died overseas from car bombs, suicide bombers, etc. Where is their recognition? Where is their Metro Toronto Convention Center funeral? Well, I guess I can’t really blame them. They probably weren’t aware that getting shot or blown up wasn’t as recognized as getting run down by a snow plow driven by a supposed homeless man with an active Facebook account. Who knew, eh?

I really don’t mean any disrespect to the fallen officer. Like I said, good for him for getting such a fancy send-off. I think it’s great that people are finally starting to take notice of the real dangers that these police officers have to deal with, along with the stress that their families have to face day in - day out. He was not killed while falsely running his siren while trying to avoid red lights. He was not killed standing behind a bus shelter with a speed gun, the man died in the line of duty… the real line of duty. 

So please, before any of you reply calling me insensitive, heartless, or a man-whore, just help me out here. I’m just trying to make sense of this whole thing.
